Science

 

It leads to the skills of observation, classification, and ultimately to science and technology. It is best for the child to be led into the world of science through these same steps.

 

The Grammar School science curriculum includes topics which are also naturalist hobbies—bird, tree, and wildflower identification, butterflies, insects, bees, and star-gazing. Students learn much about science—morphology, physiology, classification, habitats, etc.—through the detailed study of stars, bugs, birds, and trees.

 

Holy Trinity Classical Christian School’s science curriculum also includes the study of the Latin roots of scientific terminology, as well as an exposure to the beautiful tradition of English nature poetry.

 

It is important that students in K-6th learn to take delight in the beauty and wonder of nature, before they begin the study of modern science with its emphasis on the exploitation of nature for human needs.

Using the engaging The World of Animals as the primary text, alongside What is the Animal Kingdom? and What is a Mammal?, students study rodents, elephants, primates, marsupials, and much more.

 

Fourth graders study invertebrates with a special emphasis on insects. The curriculum includes a classic reader that takes a narrative approach to the life of insects as well as the Peterson First Guide: Insects. Lessons include in depth study of the orders of insects involving vivid pictures as well as opportunities for students to produce their own drawings.

 

Students study vertebrates with a special emphasis on birds. Using the What’s That Bird? curriculum students will learn about birds, their anatomy, and how they live. Students will about 30 common birds, as well as several incredible birds. In addition, our 5th graders will explore the history of medicine using J.H. Tiner’s Exploring the History of Medicine.

 

Sixth graders have an introduction to botany through the study of trees, learning about both plant morphology and taxonomy (the different parts and different kinds of plants), the processes of photosynthesis and respiration, and about flowers and fruits and other wonders of creation.

 

Students study the planet earth using the J.H. Tiner text Exploring Planet Earth as well as Geography III: Exploring and Mapping the World.

 

Eighth graders study Physical Science using Novare’s Mastery-Oriented Curriculum. The course includes the study of matter and atoms, energy, forces and fields, substances, force and motion, waves, sound and light, and electricity. This curriculum is written from a Christian foundation.

 

Freshman have an accelerated introductory course in Physics and Chemistry using Novare’s Mastery-Oriented Curriculum. This course will cover the nature of scientific knowledge, Newton’s Laws of Motion, variation and proportion, energy, heat and temperature, waves, sound, and light, electricity, fields and magnetism, substances, atomic models, the Bohr and Quantum Models of the Atom, atomic bonding, and chemical reactions. This curriculum written from a Christian foundation incorporates mathematics, history, and epistemology.
